The New Mazda CX-5

We just returned last night from the first official test drive of the new 2013 Mazda CX-5.  This CX-5 prototype ride-and-drive and SKYACTIV® technologies workshop were held outside Reykjavik, Iceland, for 56 of the most respected North American and European automotive editors from 21 countries.  The barren volcanic landscape of Iceland was chosen for its lack of vehicle traffic, a wide variety of road surfaces, and the fact that it’s about halfway between Europe and North America.

The journalists drove four different CX-5 models, all camouflaged, and all incorporating the full suite of SKYACTIV® technologies – engines, transmissions, bodies, chassis and suspensions.  There were two 2-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline models, one 2WD and one 4WD, and two 4WD SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesels.  Both engines had either a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.

The first reviews (click on the publication logos below), are nothing short of sensational.   Some of the highlights include this from Autoweek:  “In this class, where bland and uninspired vehicles make up the majority of the field, the 2013 Mazda CX-5 delivers with a driving fun factor miles ahead of the likes of the best selling Honda CR-V and the popular Toyota RAV4.”

And from Automobile Magazine: “…the CX-5 is among the most fun-to-drive compact crossovers on the market.  Mazda has perfectly captured the Zoom-Zoom ethos in a practical and stylish crossover.”

Next up for the 2013 Mazda CX-5 is a full reveal of the production model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in two weeks, followed by the North American launch and a week-long media event at the Los Angeles Auto Show in mid-November, and capped by another ride-and-drive media event just before the CX-5 goes on sale in the first quarter of next year.

There are some great reviews of the Mazda5 that you should check out:

The Detroit News article

There is nothing to compare the 2012 Mazda5 to except, maybe, the 2011 Mazda5. It's a one of a kind. Part minivan, part car, part utility vehicle, the Mazda5 is the only American Multi Activity Vehicle around that can seat six passengers and still come with a manual clutch. (An automatic is also available for the other 90 percent of drivers.). To read the whole article click the logo below

The Los Angeles Times article.
Obvious cost benefits aside, the Mazda5 is designed for everyone inside the car, not just the driver. Overhauled for 2012, the family-focused five-door, six-seater offers a lot of comfort and functionality for the money. For the whole article click the link below.

The Castro Valley Forum review.

The Mazda5 is a unique mini minivan. It combines the sportiness of a compact sedan with six-passenger accommodations, dual sliding doors — and you can even order a manual transmission! This size of vehicle is common in European and Asian countries, but Mazda offers the only one here in the U.S. To read the whole article please click on the logo below

2011 MAZDA3 NAMED “TOP SAFETY PICK” BY INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY

- Popular compact sedan and hatchback receive highest safety rating from IIHS -

IRVINE, Calif. (March 21, 2011) – The 2011 Mazda3 was today recognized as a “Top Safety Pick” by the

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Mazda3 received the organization’s highest possible

crash safety rating of “Good” in all four tests conducted.

“Nearly half of all Mazdas sold in the United States are Mazda3s, so we are justifiably proud of the 2011

Mazda3 earning the distinction of the IIHS ‘Top Safety Pick,’” said Jim O’Sullivan, President and CEO,

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Both the sedan and hatchback models are recognized with

this award, examples of Mazda’s dedication not only to producing engaging and fun-to-drive vehicles but

those offering the utmost quality and safety.”

Vehicles receive ratings based on results from the Institute’s evaluations on front, side and rear impact

crash tests as well as a roof strength test (implemented in 2010), which measures occupant protection in

the event of a rollover. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion specific

to each crash angle and the injury impact on crash test dummies positioned within the vehicles at the time

of collision. Only vehicles equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are eligible for testing.

The 2011 Mazda3 recently was named a “Recommended” vehicle by a leading consumer publication and

the sedan model praised as its “Most Fun Small Sedan” and a “Best Vehicle Under $20,000.”

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Mazda MX-5 Miata

You've probably seen the TV ads touting Mazda's ubiquity on America's road-racing circuits and autocross courses. The message goes like this: On any weekend, more racers are driving Mazdas than any other brand. That's a big claim, but this little roadster makes it credible. The Miata is a favorite with amateur racers for essentially the same reasons it's perennially popular as a road car: affordability, low curb weight, high agility. This is not the kind of sports car that provokes acceleration brownouts. Mated to one of two manual transmissions (five- or six-speed), its 2.0-liter four generates 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. (Opting for the six-speed automatic takes nine ponies from the corral, slows acceleration, eliminates the crisp-shifting manual, and adds $2260 to the bottom line.) If 167 horsepower sounds tepid, keep in mind that it only has to propel some 2450 pounds, which it manages smartly. And in any case, the Miata's magic lies in its eager responses and the unfiltered connection between car and driver. It doesn't hurt that the magic is wrapped in bargain pricing. A basic roadster with the five-speed manual starts at $23,905; the excellent folding-hardtop version (12 seconds up or down, and it preserves the softtop's trunk space) begins at $27,945. So it's easy to see why this is the world's best-loved roadster.
